What is numerology?
Numerology is the belief that numbers carry meaning, and that the numbers in your birth name and birth date describe something true about you. The system most numerology calculators use is Pythagorean, which assigns every letter a value from 1 to 9 and then reduces the total to a single digit.
The five core numbers
- Life path number — from your date of birth. The most important number in your chart: the road you are on.
- Expression (destiny) number — from all the letters of your full birth name. Your natural talents and what you are here to do.
- Soul urge (heart's desire) number — from the vowels in your name. What you actually want, underneath everything else.
- Personality number — from the consonants. The part of you other people meet first.
- Birthday number — the day of the month you were born. A specific gift you carry.

How to calculate your life path number by hand
Reduce your birth month, day and year to single digits, then add those three together and reduce again. For 14 March 1990: month 3, day 14 becomes 1+4 = 5, year 1990 becomes 1+9+9+0 = 19, then 1+9 = 10, then 1+0 = 1. Add 3 + 5 + 1 = 9. The life path is 9.
Master numbers: 11, 22 and 33
If a total reduces to 11, 22 or 33, numerologists stop there rather than reducing to a single digit. These are the master numbers, said to carry a higher charge and a heavier demand — more potential, and more pressure with it.
