What is a birth chart?
A birth chart — also called a natal chart — is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born. Where each planet sat against the zodiac at that moment is said to describe a different part of who you are. A free birth chart calculator works out those placements from your birth date, birth time and birth place.
Your big three: sun, moon and rising
Most people start with the big three, because they carry the most weight in a natal chart reading:
- Sun sign — your core identity, ego and what drives you. This is the sign you already know.
- Moon sign — your emotional inner world, instincts and what makes you feel safe.
- Rising sign (ascendant) — the mask you wear, and the first impression people get of you.
Why your birth time matters
The ascendant moves through all twelve signs every twenty-four hours, changing roughly every two hours. That is why a birth chart calculator asks for your time of birth: get it wrong by a couple of hours and your rising sign changes completely. Your sun sign and moon sign are far more forgiving.
